When it fails, owners report a whistle, a rough idle and oil leaks, and the fix is usually a whole new valve cover ([ProductReview owner reviews](https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/holden-astra-bk-2016-present)). Start the engine and listen near the top of it for a whistle or hiss at idle. The idle should be steady. Look for oil around the valve cover, and a check engine light. Ask whether the valve cover has been replaced, with receipts. If it whistles, price the repair into your offer. ### Creaking Front Suspension Bushes On BK Astra hatches, the bushes in the front lower control arms can come apart inside, causing a creak from the front over speed humps. Holden's fix was to replace the arm ([AustralianCar.Reviews](https://www.australiancar.reviews/recalls-faults-holden-bk-astra-2016-20/)). On the drive, go slowly over speed humps and driveways with the windows down, and listen for creaks or knocks from the front. Check the steering feels tight. Worn control arms are a moderate repair. Price it into your offer, and have them checked if the noise is loud or the steering feels loose. ### Piston Damage From Early Ignition Small turbo petrol engines like the Astra's can suffer early ignition at low revs under heavy load, which can crack pistons. Using the right oil and fuel lowers the risk. Check the service history for oil changes on time with the oil Holden specified. On the drive, listen for knocking or pinging when accelerating hard at low revs, and watch for a check engine light or a misfire. A damaged piston means major engine work. If the engine knocks, runs rough or has a check engine light, have a mechanic check it before you buy. ## Which Holden Astra Years to Avoid? No single Holden Astra year stands out as one to avoid. Newer ones usually have fewer kilometres and less wear. Whatever the year, a car's condition, service history and recalls tell you more than its build date, and Shufti looks up the reported faults and recalls for the exact car from its listing. - **BK hatch (2016–2020).** 6 to 10 years old, typically about 80,000–130,000 km. ANCAP ratings: [5 stars (2015) for R+, RS and RS-V hatches built to 2019](https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/holden/astra-25ad9072-b3da-4fb0-863e-37045a3cac7c/6fdede); [5 stars (2015) for Sportwagons](https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/holden/astra-25ad9072-b3da-4fb0-863e-37045a3cac7c/36140f); [5 stars (2015) for hatches built from January 2020](https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/holden/astra-25ad9072-b3da-4fb0-863e-37045a3cac7c/ce3d39). Stability control is standard. AEB is on some variants, and standard on Sportwagons and on hatches built from January 2020. Most have done enough kilometres for wear items to come due: check the service history for regular servicing, and whether tyres, brakes and the battery need replacing. - **BL sedan (2017–2020).** 6 to 9 years old, typically about 80,000–110,000 km. ANCAP rating: [5 stars (2017)](https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/holden/astra-25ad9072-b3da-4fb0-863e-37045a3cac7c/4fc8d4). Stability control is standard; AEB wasn't available. Most have done enough kilometres for wear items to come due: check the service history for regular servicing, and whether tyres, brakes and the battery need replacing. Kilometres are at the Australian average of about 12,600 km a year. Well above that means harder use; well below, ask why. ## Holden Astra General Inspection Guide A guide to checking for Holden Astra problems, built on the [used car buying checklist](https://shufti.com.au/checklists/australian-used-car-inspection-checklist) for any car. It can't cover every problem reported across its years in one viewing. Tick it if it's fine. Cross it if it isn't, and note what you found so you can price it into your offer. - Safety critical: Affects how safely it drives or protects you in a crash. Best to have a mechanic check it before you buy. - Negotiate: Costs money to fix, from wear to major repairs. Get a quote and take it off the price. ### Exterior - [ ] **Bodywork.** Walk around and check panel gaps are even and paint colour matches across all panels and door jambs. Overspray on rubber seals or trim means a panel has been repainted. Uneven gaps usually mean a panel has been refitted after a crash. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Rust.** Check the sills, wheel arches, door bottoms and tailgate for bubbling paint or rust. This is more likely on a car that's spent time near the coast. Rust starting at the bottom of doors often means it's eating through from the inside out. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Headlights.** Turn on every light and check each one works and the lenses are clear. Cloudy lenses dim the beam at night. Cloudy lenses can often be polished back to clear, but check the price before accepting it. (Negotiate) - [ ] **VIN plate.** Find the VIN plate in a door frame or under the bonnet and check it's intact and matches the paperwork. It should look original, not re-stamped or loose. A tampered plate can mean the car's identity or history has been altered. ### Under the Bonnet - [ ] **Engine oil.** Pull the dipstick and check the oil sits between the marks and looks brown, not black or gritty. Black, gritty oil suggests servicing has been skipped. Oil well above the top mark can point to a leak elsewhere being masked. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Idle quality.** Start the engine from cold and listen at idle for a whistling or hissing noise along with a rough, uneven idle. A whistle alongside a lumpy idle points to a failed valve in the engine's breather system. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Coolant.** Check the coolant sits at the mark in the overflow bottle and is brightly coloured, not rusty or oily. Oily coolant can mean a blown head gasket, a costly repair. Frequent top-ups point to a slow leak somewhere in the system. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Drive belt.** With the engine off, look at the drive belt for cracks, fraying or glazing on its surface. A cracked or frayed belt can fail without warning. Glazing (a shiny surface) means the belt is hardened and due for replacement. (Negotiate) ### Underbody and Wheels - [ ] **Tyre tread.** Check tread depth on all four tyres is above the wear bars and wears evenly across each one. Wear on one edge only suggests the wheels are out of alignment. Uneven wear across the tyre can also point to worn suspension parts. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Front suspension bushes.** With the car stationary, rock the front of the car and listen for a creaking or knocking noise from underneath, then check for this again on the test drive over bumps. A creak over small bumps points to a worn or de-bonded bush at the front. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Chassis rust.** Look at the floor and around the suspension mounts for rust, bent metal, fresh welds or a patch of new black coating in one spot. Any of these can mean hidden crash damage. Fresh undercoating in just one spot is often used to hide repair work. (Safety critical) - [ ] **Brake discs.** Look at the visible edge of each brake disc through the wheel for deep grooves or a raised lip. A heavily grooved disc means it's due for replacement. A raised outer lip means the disc is worn thinner than it should be. (Safety critical) ### Interior and Electrics - [ ] **Warning lights.** Turn the key to "on" and check every dash light comes on then goes out once the engine is running. An airbag, brake or engine light that stays lit needs an explanation. A light that's been taped over or a bulb removed is a red flag. (Safety critical) - [ ] **Seatbelts.** Pull each seatbelt out fully and let it retract, then click it into the buckle. It should move smoothly with no fraying or stiffness. A belt that doesn't retract properly may not hold you firmly in a crash. (Safety critical) - [ ] **Air con.** Run the air con for a minute or two and check it blows cold air without a musty smell. A weak or warm flow can mean the system needs regassing. A musty smell often means the cabin filter is overdue. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Electrics.** Test the touchscreen, Bluetooth pairing, windows, mirrors and reversing camera if fitted. A dead screen or sensor can be costly to fix. (Negotiate) ### Test Drive - [ ] **Automatic gearbox.** Automatic: drive through all gears and feel for slipping, delay or a thump when shifting into Drive or Reverse. Shifts should feel smooth and quick. A jerky or shuddering shift between gears points to a transmission problem. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Manual clutch.** Manual: in a higher gear at about 50 km/h, floor the accelerator briefly and feel if the revs rise faster than the car's speed. If so, the clutch is slipping. A clutch that slips under load will need replacing soon, which is a big cost. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Brakes.** Brake firmly from speed on an empty road; the car should stop straight with no pulling, pulsing or grinding. A grinding noise means the pads have worn down to metal. (Safety critical) - [ ] **Steering.** Check the car tracks straight with no wandering, and the steering feels consistent at all speeds without going heavy or light suddenly. A whine or the assistance cutting in and out points to a power steering fault. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Engine mounts.** Sit at idle in Drive and feel for heavy shaking through the floor or steering wheel, then pull away gently and listen for a clunk. A clunk when you pull away or shift into Reverse often means a worn engine mount. (Negotiate) ### Documentation - [ ] **Seller's ID.** Check the seller's ID matches the name on the rego papers, and that the VIN matches across the papers and the VIN plate on the car. Any mismatch needs an explanation before you pay anything. - [ ] **Service history.** Look through the logbook for stamps on time with matching receipts, and check the odometer readings climb steadily with no gaps. Missing stamps or a sudden jump in kilometres can mean skipped services or odometer tampering. (Negotiate) - [ ] **Roadworthy certificate.** Check the registration status online and confirm a current roadworthy certificate is supplied if your state requires one for a private sale. An unregistered car or missing certificate can mean extra cost and delay before you can drive it home. (Negotiate) ## Stay Safe Never go under a car held up only by a jack, and never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine. Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of fans and belts when the engine is running, and do checks under the bonnet with it switched off where you can. On the test drive, hold a current licence, confirm the car is registered and insured, obey road rules, and only brake hard when the road behind is clear. Meet in a safe, public-facing place, take someone with you, and don't carry large amounts of cash to a viewing. ## Disclaimer Shufti is not affiliated with or endorsed by Holden or General Motors; Holden and Astra are trademarks of General Motors LLC. It depends more on the particular car than the badge: how it was driven, loaded and serviced. Work through the commonly reported problems above, read the service history for servicing done on time, and run a PPSR check. ### Which Holden Astra years should I avoid? No single Holden Astra year stands out as one to avoid. Newer ones usually have fewer kilometres and less wear. Whatever the year, a car's condition, service history and recalls tell you more than its build date, and Shufti looks up the reported faults and recalls for the exact car from its listing. This checklist covers the BK hatch (2016–2020) and BL sedan (2017–2020) Holden Astra. Problems reported across them include a failed PCV valve, creaking front suspension bushes and piston damage from early ignition. ### How many kilometres is too many for a used Holden Astra? Kilometres matter less than how the car was driven and serviced. A high-kilometre car with a full service history can be a better buy than a low-kilometre one that's missed services or spent years on short trips. Check the history for regular oil changes, and find out whether any timing belt replacement is due, as it's a costly job. ### Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a used Holden Astra? It's most worth it on a car where a hidden fault could be costly. Hidden crash repairs and gearbox problems are easy to miss on a short test drive, so check panel gaps and paint closely and drive it long enough to feel every gear change. Either way, start by checking the car yourself with this checklist, so you know what to look for and whether it's worth paying a mechanic to see. See Pre-purchase car inspection: what it checks and costs (https://shufti.com.au/guides/used-car-inspection-options) ### How do I check a used Holden Astra for money owing or a write-off? Run a PPSR check with the car's VIN on ppsr.gov.au (https://www.ppsr.gov.au/). It shows whether there's finance owing and whether the car has been reported stolen or written off. Run it on the day you pay. See What a PPSR check covers and what it doesn't (https://shufti.com.au/guides/what-is-a-ppsr-check) ### How do I check recalls on a used Holden Astra? Search the government's Vehicle Recalls site for the Holden Astra (https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/browse-all-recalls?search=Holden%20Astra). Each notice says which models and build dates it covers and what the fault is. A recall on record doesn't tell you whether the work was done on a particular car, so ask the seller for proof, or ask a Holden dealer to check the VIN. --- Shufti is an Australian used car inspection app for iPhone and Android that tailors the inspection to the exact car you're looking at. It is not affiliated with Shufti Pro, the identity verification (KYC) company. From the listing link, it builds every check around that car's make, model and year, odometer reading and the seller's description. It runs PPSR and government recall checks, crosschecks a database of more than 3 million recalls and owner complaints, flags problems from your photos and audio, plans a test drive, produces a shareable report with repair cost estimates, and coaches you through the negotiation. A Tailored check costs $24.99, or $49.99 for three, including PPSR and recall checks. A mechanic's pre-purchase inspection costs $250–350. To start, Shufti's General inspection guide is free: pick the car's make and model, and it takes you through the checks that matter for that model, on your phone.
