# Used Mazda2 DJ (2014 On): Problems and Which Years to Buy > What's reported on the Mazda2 DJ sold from 2014, the build years its six recalls cover, and what to check at the car. Last updated: 6 November 2026. Web page: https://shufti.com.au/checklists/used-mazda2-inspection-checklist/dj. Engines: 1.5 petrol (SkyActiv-G). ## Common Problems on a Used DJ Mazda2 The DJ has few big mechanical reports. Owners mention variable valve timing faults on older or neglected cars, driver-assist warnings that come on at random, power mirrors that stop folding, and dash rattles. What matters most is its recalls: there are six, and which ones apply depends on the build year. ### Is a Mazda2 DJ reliable? Yes, on the reports we have. The work at a viewing is confirming its recalls, which include the fuel tank, fuel pump, parking brake and front suspension on different years. ## Mazda2 DJ Problems ### Engine and gearbox - **Variable valve timing faults.** Covers: Mostly older or neglected cars. Skipped oil changes are often behind it, so the service history is your best guide. - What to check: Start it cold and listen for rattling in the first few seconds. Check no engine light stays on. - Ask the seller: How often was the oil changed, and can I see the records? - **Carbon build-up affecting the idle.** Covers: Reported from 2015. Cars that only do short trips are the likeliest. Have a rough idle looked at. - What to check: Let it idle warm and feel for shaking or hunting revs. - **Worn engine and gearbox mounts.** Covers: Reported on 2012–20 cars. Worn mounts send vibration through the car. They're a moderate repair to price in. - What to check: Feel for vibration at idle in Drive and a thump as you take off. - **Clutch shudder or slip.** Covers: Manual cars. It's most obvious taking off on a hill or from cold. A worn clutch is a cost to price in. - What to check: Pull away on a slope from cold and feel for shudder. ### Brakes and suspension - **Rear drum brake self-adjuster seizing.** Covers: Reported on 2012–19 cars. A seized adjuster leaves the rear brakes doing less of the work, so have them inspected. - What to check: Feel for a long brake pedal or a handbrake that pulls up too far. - Ask the seller: When were the rear brakes last serviced? - **Worn suspension bushes.** Covers: Reported up to 2017 cars. Bushes are a normal wear item, so price them in if the car feels loose. - What to check: Listen for knocks over small bumps and feel for wander under braking. ### Electrics and comfort - **Driver-assist warnings coming on at random.** Covers: Cars with systems such as automatic braking. A blocked sensor or camera is often behind it, so start by cleaning them. A warning that stays on needs a diagnosis. - What to check: Drive for a while and watch for warnings on the dash. - **Power mirrors that stop folding.** Covers: Early cars, from worn plastic gears. An annoyance rather than a danger, and a small amount to take off your offer. - What to check: Fold and unfold both mirrors, and listen for clicking. - **Dashboard rattles.** Covers: Reported across the range. These are hard to fix and rarely serious, so decide whether you can live with it. - What to check: Drive over a rough road with the radio off. - **Touchscreen freezing or ghost touches.** Covers: Reported on 2019–24 cars. It can lose the reversing camera, which matters if you rely on it. - What to check: Use the screen, select reverse and make sure the camera comes on. - **Headlight condensation.** Covers: Reported on 2014–18 cars. Light misting is often harmless, but water sitting in a lamp may mean a new one. - What to check: Look inside both headlights for water. ## Which Mazda2 DJ Years to Avoid? No year stands out for faults, but each year has its own recalls. A 2016–18 car has the parking brake recall, and 2017–19 cars have the fuel pump. Our shortlist: Any DJ with its recalls confirmed by a dealer and regular oil changes. AEB was optional, so check whether the car has it. ### What changed, by build date - 2014: DJ goes on sale, with a six-speed automatic. - Aug 2015: DL sedan joins the hatch. - Feb 2018: Parking brake recall on 14,433 cars from 2016–18. - Dec 2021: Fuel pump recall on 2017–19 cars, across several Mazdas. - Dec 2022: ANCAP rating expires, so later cars are unrated. ## Recalls to Confirm - Apr 2016: 2013–2015, with the CX-3 and CX-9. Front strut bolt may be loose, risking loss of steering control. [PRA 2016/15311](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-000866) - July 2016: 2015–2016. Weld on the fuel tank's rollover valve can peel off and leak fuel. [PRA 2016/15547](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-000868) - June 2017: 2016–2017, with the CX-3. Brake hose clips can rust and break, leaking brake fluid. [PRA 2017/16080](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-000871) - Feb 2018: 2016–2018. Parking brake can let go, so a car on a slope may roll. [PRA 2018/16586](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-000875) - Sept 2019: 2018–2019. Oversized fuel tank can strain its strap, which may break. [PRA 2019/17817](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-000892) - Dec 2021: 2017–2019, with other Mazdas. Fuel pump can stop working, stalling the car. [REC-005009](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-005009) ### How many recalls does the Mazda2 DJ have? We list six, spread across build years from about 2013 to 2019. Ask a Mazda dealer which apply to that VIN and whether they were done. ### Does a Mazda2 DJ have AEB? It was optional, so it depends on the car. Stability control is standard. ### Is a sedan or hatch DJ different to check? The checks here apply to both. The DL sedan joined the hatch in August 2015. --- Shufti is an Australian used car inspection app for iPhone and Android that tailors the inspection to the exact car you're looking at. It is not affiliated with Shufti Pro, the identity verification (KYC) company. From the listing link, it builds every check around that car's make, model and year, odometer reading and the seller's description. It runs PPSR and government recall checks, crosschecks a database of more than 3 million recalls and owner complaints, flags problems from your photos and audio, plans a test drive, produces a shareable report with repair cost estimates, and coaches you through the negotiation. A Tailored check costs $24.99, or $49.99 for three, including PPSR and recall checks. A mechanic's pre-purchase inspection costs $250–350. To start, Shufti's General inspection guide is free: pick the car's make and model, and it takes you through the checks that matter for that model, on your phone. There's a guide for popular models, and one for every type of car. Made by Frontpoint Digital Pty Ltd (ABN 23 669 870 366), Melbourne, Australia. Contact: hello@shufti.com.au.
