# Is It Safe to Buy a Repaired Write-Off? Last updated: 4 November 2026. Web page: https://shufti.com.au/guides/buying-a-repaired-write-off. It can be, if the repair was done properly and the price allows for what you give up. A repairable write-off was assessed as a total loss, then repaired and inspected to go back on the road; a statutory write-off can never be registered again. Expect a repaired write-off to be harder to insure and worth less when you sell, and have it checked by someone who knows crash repairs before you buy. ## Repairable vs Statutory Write-Offs An insurer writes a car off when it decides it's a total loss, usually because repairs would cost more than the car is worth. It's then assessed against national damage criteria and recorded as one of two types: | Type | What it means | Can it be registered again? | | --- | --- | --- | | Repairable write-off | Written off on cost, but the damage isn't severe enough to rule out a safe repair. | In most states, yes, after repairs and inspections. In NSW, only in limited cases. | | Statutory write-off | Damage severe enough that the car can never be safely repaired, such as a badly burnt or structurally damaged one. | Never. It can only be used for parts or scrap. | ## A Write-Off Stays on the Record Write-off status is permanent and follows the car from state to state, and it shows on a PPSR search ([Queensland Government](https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/vehicle-safety/written-off-vehicles/how-scheme-works)). See [what a PPSR check covers](https://shufti.com.au/guides/what-is-a-ppsr-check). In NSW, a write-off that has been repaired and re-registered is also noted on the certificate of registration. A write-off you weren't told about is one of the hidden problems in [how to avoid buying a lemon](https://shufti.com.au/guides/how-to-avoid-buying-a-lemon). Hail is the main exception. In Victoria, cosmetic hail damage alone no longer puts a car on the written-off register, and in NSW a car written off only for hail and kept by its owner is treated differently. ## Re-Registering a Repairable Write-Off in Each State | State | Can it be re-registered? | What it needs | | --- | --- | --- | | NSW | Only if you were the registered operator for more than 28 days before the damage, the damage was hail only and you're the same operator, or you inherited it. A car written off interstate must be repaired and registered in that state first ([NSW Government](https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/vehicle-registration/written-off-vehicles/re-registering-a-written-off-light-vehicle)). | Authorisation to repair before work starts, a licensed repairer's certificate, and identity and safety inspections. | | Victoria | Yes ([Transport Victoria](https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-and-active-transport/road-rules-and-safety/written-off-vehicles/buying-a-written-off-vehicle)). | A roadworthy certificate and a vehicle identity validation (VIV) certificate. Receipts for the parts and repairs. | | Queensland | Yes ([Queensland Government](https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/vehicle-safety/written-off-vehicles/how-scheme-works)). | A safety certificate and a written-off vehicle inspection, with original receipts in the owner's name. | | WA | Yes ([Transport WA](https://transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/vehicle/written-off-vehicles/license-repairable-written-off)). | A written-off vehicle inspection, then an identity and roadworthy check at an inspection station that didn't do the repair, and an approved immobiliser. | | SA | Yes ([SA Government](https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-and-transport/vehicles/vehicle-inspections/written-off-vehicles)). | An identity inspection, then a road safety inspection, with a record of the repairs. | ## Already Registered or Not Yet A repaired write-off that's already back on the road has passed its state's inspections, which is the safer buy. Those inspections check the car's identity, that it isn't rebuilt with stolen parts, and its roadworthiness on the day. They aren't a full check of the quality of the crash repair, so the inspection below still matters. A write-off that hasn't been re-registered is a bigger risk: the repairs, receipts and inspections become your problem, and it may fail. In NSW, a car written off there generally can't be re-registered by a new owner at all ([NSW Government](https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/vehicle-registration/written-off-vehicles/owning-or-buying-a-written-off-light-vehicle)). Unless you're a repairer, avoid them. ## What to Check on a Repaired Write-Off Go through each of these before you agree to buy. A car written off after a flood needs more care than one written off for hail or a crash: see [how to spot a flood-damaged car](https://shufti.com.au/guides/how-to-spot-a-flood-damaged-car). | Check | What to look for | | --- | --- | | Why it was written off | Ask, and check it against the PPSR. Hail damage is usually the least worrying; flood and major crash damage the most. | | Repair records | Itemised receipts for parts and labour, photos from before and during the repair, the repairer's details, and the inspection certificates. | | Body and structure | Uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, fresh welds, kinks or clamp marks on the chassis rails, and new underbody coating in one area. | | Airbags and safety systems | The airbag warning light comes on with the ignition, then goes off. Any warning light that stays on needs explaining. | | On the test drive | Pulling to one side, a steering wheel that isn't straight, uneven tyre wear and new rattles or wind noise. | | A specialist's inspection | Have a mechanic or crash repair specialist look underneath, and ask for a wheel alignment check. | ## Insurance and Resale Get an insurance quote using the VIN before you agree to buy. Some insurers decline repaired write-offs, or offer narrower cover or a lower insured value, which can make a cheap car expensive to own. The write-off will show on every buyer's PPSR search when you sell, so it'll be worth less than the same car without one. Pay accordingly: compare it with clean cars of the same age and kilometres and expect a clear discount, then [negotiate](https://shufti.com.au/guides/how-to-negotiate-used-car-price) on whatever the inspection finds. Shufti, the used car inspection app, runs the PPSR check, which shows any write-off, with the recall check and an inspection checklist for the car, from its listing link. ## Questions Answered ### Is it safe to buy a repaired write-off? It can be, if it was a repairable write-off, the repair was done properly and it has passed its state's inspections. It is not affiliated with Shufti Pro, the identity verification (KYC) company. From the listing link, it builds every check around that car's make, model and year, odometer reading and the seller's description. It runs PPSR and government recall checks, crosschecks a database of more than 3 million recalls and owner complaints, flags problems from your photos and audio, plans a test drive, produces a shareable report with repair cost estimates, and coaches you through the negotiation. A Tailored check costs $24.99, or $49.99 for three, including PPSR and recall checks. A mechanic's pre-purchase inspection costs $250–350. To start, Shufti's General inspection guide is free: pick the car's make and model, and it takes you through the checks that matter for that model, on your phone. There's a guide for popular models, and one for every type of car. Made by Frontpoint Digital Pty Ltd (ABN 23 669 870 366), Melbourne, Australia. Contact: hello@shufti.com.au.
