Common Problems on a Used Land Rover Discovery

The most commonly reported problems on a used Land Rover Discovery are leaking air suspension, an electronic park brake that faults, water leaks into the cabin, coolant loss and oil leaks, and electrical faults. It's a complex 4x4, so a full service history matters more than the kilometres.

Which of these apply depends on the year and engine. Shufti works that out for a particular car from its listing.

Air Suspension Leaks

Many Discoveries ride on air suspension: rubber air springs at each corner, fed by a compressor. As the rubber ages it cracks and leaks, the compressor works harder to keep up, and eventually overheats or fails.

Ask for the car to be parked overnight where you'll see it. It should sit level side to side and front to back; a corner sitting low is a leak. Raise and lower it with the height switch: it should move evenly and hold height, with no suspension warning. Listen for the compressor running on and on.

Air springs and compressors are expensive, and a leak rarely stays at one corner. Ask what's been replaced, with receipts, and price any fault into your offer.

Electronic Park Brake Faults

The Discovery's park brake is electric, worked by a switch rather than a lever, and owners report it failing to apply or release, with warning messages on the dash.

Apply and release the park brake several times with the engine running and off. It should work every time without noise or a warning, and hold the car on a slope.

Repairs range from a software reset to a new park brake unit. Ask about any work, with receipts, and price a fault into your offer.

Water Leaks Into the Cabin

Owners report water getting in around the windscreen, door seals and sunroofs. Water inside can ruin carpets, cause mould and, on a car this full of electronics, damage modules under the seats and floor.

Feel under the floor mats, including the rear footwells and boot, for damp; look for stains on the headlining near the sunroofs and windscreen; sniff for a musty smell.

A new seal or cleared drain is cheap; electrical damage from water is not. If it's damp inside, have it checked before you buy.

Coolant Loss and Oil Leaks

Owners report coolant loss from plastic pipes, the thermostat housing and the exhaust gas cooler, and oil leaks from around the engine and gearbox. An engine that runs low on coolant or oil can be badly damaged.

With the engine cold, check the coolant is at the mark. Look around and under the engine and gearbox for wet oil, coolant crust or drips. After the test drive, watch the temperature gauge stays steady and sniff for a sweet smell.

Some fixes are cheap; others mean taking a lot apart. Ask for receipts for any work, and have a specialist check leaks before you buy.

Timing Chain Wear

The timing chain keeps the engine's moving parts in step. On some Discovery engines, the chain or the part that keeps it tight can wear, and a chain that jumps can wreck the engine.

Ask for the engine to be cold, and listen as it starts: a rattle from the engine for the first few seconds is a warning sign. Check for an engine warning light too.

Ask whether the timing chain or its tensioner has been replaced, with receipts. If it rattles, have a mechanic check it before you buy; it's an expensive job.

Which Land Rover Discovery Years to Avoid?

No Land Rover Discovery year is one to avoid outright. Which problems a particular car has depends on its generation, its engine and how it was used, so judge the one in front of you rather than the year alone, starting with its recalls and reported faults (Shufti looks these up from the listing).

  • Discovery 3 (2005–2009). Every one is now over 10 years old, so condition and history count for more than the year: look hard for rust, worn suspension and leaks, and check whether a timing belt (if it has one) has been replaced.
  • Discovery 4 (2009–2017). Most have done enough kilometres for wear items to come due: check the service history for regular servicing, and whether tyres, brakes and the battery need replacing.
  • Discovery 5 (2017 on). The current model. The newest may still have some new-car warranty left; on older ones, check the service history and whether tyres, brakes and the battery are due.

Which recalls and reported faults apply depends on the exact year and engine. Shufti works them out for the Discovery you're looking at, from its listing.

Stay Safe

Never go under a car held up only by a jack, and never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine. Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of fans and belts when the engine is running, and do checks under the bonnet with it switched off where you can. On the test drive, hold a current licence, confirm the car is registered and insured, obey road rules, and only brake hard when the road behind is clear. Meet in a safe, public-facing place, take someone with you, and don't carry large amounts of cash to a viewing.

Buying a Used Land Rover Discovery: Questions Answered

Is a used Land Rover Discovery reliable?

It depends more on the particular car than the badge: how it was driven, loaded and serviced. Work through the commonly reported problems above, read the service history for servicing done on time, and run a PPSR check.

Which Land Rover Discovery years should I avoid?

No Land Rover Discovery year is one to avoid outright. Which problems a particular car has depends on its generation, its engine and how it was used, so judge the one in front of you rather than the year alone, starting with its recalls and reported faults (Shufti looks these up from the listing).

This checklist covers the Discovery 3 (2005–2009), Discovery 4 (2009–2017) and Discovery 5 (2017 on) Land Rover Discovery. Problems reported across them include air suspension leaks, electronic park brake faults, water leaks into the cabin, coolant loss and oil leaks and timing chain wear.

How many kilometres is too many for a used Land Rover Discovery?

Kilometres matter less than how the car was driven and serviced. A high-kilometre SUV with a full service history can be a better buy than a low-kilometre one that's missed services, done short trips or been used for rideshare. Check the history for regular servicing, and on a hybrid ask for a battery health check.

Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a used Land Rover Discovery?

It's worth it if you can. All-wheel-drive and hybrid systems can hide faults that only a mechanic's tools will show. Most buyers don't book one, though, so whatever you decide, check the car thoroughly yourself with this checklist first. See Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it?

How do I check a used Land Rover Discovery for money owing or a write-off?

Run a PPSR check with the car's VIN. It shows whether there's finance owing and whether the car has been reported stolen or written off, and costs $2. Run it on the day you pay. See What a PPSR check covers and what it doesn't

Mechanic, Checklist or Shufti?

Here's how Shufti stacks up against your other options.

A mechanic's inspection is the most thorough, but most buyers go without one. Shufti makes sure you're well informed either way.
