Common Problems on a Used Holden Cruze

The most commonly reported problems on a used Holden Cruze are coolant leaks, oil and coolant mixing on some engines, and oil leaking from around the engine's top cover and turbo pipes. Many are cheap cars with patchy servicing, and with Holden gone since 2020, check parts prices before you buy.

Which of these apply depends on the year and engine. Shufti works that out for a particular car from its listing.

Coolant Leaks

Some Cruzes leak coolant as they age, from the plastic housings, hoses and coolant tank around the engine. A slow leak gets worse over time, and an engine that runs low on coolant can overheat and be badly damaged.

With the engine cold, check the coolant is at the mark and a clean orange colour. Look around the engine and coolant tank for dried, crusty residue or drips, and sniff for a sweet smell after the drive. The temperature gauge should stay steady.

Ask whether any coolant parts have been replaced, with receipts. Most leaks are a moderate repair, so price it into your offer, and walk away from a car that runs hot.

Oil and Coolant Mixing

Some Cruze engines have an oil cooler that uses the engine's coolant. When its seals fail, oil and coolant can mix, contaminating both. Left alone, it can damage the engine and cooling system.

Look in the coolant tank for oil, a brown sludge or an oily film, and on the dipstick and under the oil cap for a milky, creamy residue, which can mean coolant in the oil. Ask whether the coolant has ever needed topping up.

Ask whether the oil cooler or its seals have been replaced, with receipts. If oil and coolant are mixing, have a mechanic check it before you buy: a flush and seal replacement is far cheaper than an engine.

Oil Leaks From Around the Engine's Top Cover

On some Cruzes, the gasket under the engine's top cover hardens and leaks oil with age, and on turbo versions, oil can also seep from the turbo pipes. Leaking oil can drip onto hot parts, causing smoke and a burning smell.

With a torch, look around the top cover, the turbo pipes and down the back of the engine for wet oil. Check under the car and where it's normally parked for drips, and sniff for burning oil after the drive.

Gaskets are a cheap to moderate repair, so price it in. A freshly degreased engine on an older car can be hiding a leak, so look closely.

Parts and Servicing Since Holden Left

Holden stopped selling cars in Australia in 2020. Cruzes can still be serviced and repaired, but some parts can be slower or dearer to get than for a brand still on sale, and fewer dealers know the Cruze well.

Ask where the car has been serviced. Before you buy, check the price of parts for any repair the inspection turns up, and get an insurance quote, so there are no surprises after you own it.

Which Holden Cruze Years to Avoid?

No Holden Cruze year is one to avoid outright. Which problems a particular car has depends on its generation, its engine and how it was used, so judge the one in front of you rather than the year alone, starting with its recalls and reported faults (Shufti looks these up from the listing).

  • JG (2009–2011). Every one is now over 10 years old, so condition and history count for more than the year: look hard for rust, worn suspension and leaks, and check whether a timing belt (if it has one) has been replaced.
  • JH (2011–2016). Every one is now over 10 years old, so condition and history count for more than the year: look hard for rust, worn suspension and leaks, and check whether a timing belt (if it has one) has been replaced.

Which recalls and reported faults apply depends on the exact year and engine. Shufti works them out for the Cruze you're looking at, from its listing.

Stay Safe

Never go under a car held up only by a jack, and never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine. Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of fans and belts when the engine is running, and do checks under the bonnet with it switched off where you can. On the test drive, hold a current licence, confirm the car is registered and insured, obey road rules, and only brake hard when the road behind is clear. Meet in a safe, public-facing place, take someone with you, and don't carry large amounts of cash to a viewing.

Buying a Used Holden Cruze: Questions Answered

Is a used Holden Cruze reliable?

It depends more on the particular car than the badge: how it was driven, loaded and serviced. Work through the commonly reported problems above, read the service history for servicing done on time, and run a PPSR check.

Which Holden Cruze years should I avoid?

No Holden Cruze year is one to avoid outright. Which problems a particular car has depends on its generation, its engine and how it was used, so judge the one in front of you rather than the year alone, starting with its recalls and reported faults (Shufti looks these up from the listing).

This checklist covers the JG (2009–2011) and JH (2011–2016) Holden Cruze. Problems reported across them include coolant leaks, oil and coolant mixing and oil leaks from around the engine's top cover.

How many kilometres is too many for a used Holden Cruze?

Kilometres matter less than how the car was driven and serviced. A high-kilometre car with a full service history can be a better buy than a low-kilometre one that's missed services or spent years on short trips. Check the history for regular oil changes, and find out whether any timing belt replacement is due, as it's a costly job.

Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a used Holden Cruze?

It's worth it if you can. A mechanic can spot hidden crash repairs and gearbox problems that are easy to miss on a short test drive. Most buyers don't book one, though, so whatever you decide, check the car thoroughly yourself with this checklist first. See Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it?

How do I check a used Holden Cruze for money owing or a write-off?

Run a PPSR check with the car's VIN. It shows whether there's finance owing and whether the car has been reported stolen or written off, and costs $2. Run it on the day you pay. See What a PPSR check covers and what it doesn't

Mechanic, Checklist or Shufti?

Here's how Shufti stacks up against your other options.

A mechanic's inspection is the most thorough, but most buyers go without one. Shufti makes sure you're well informed either way.
