Common Problems on a Used Mazda CX-9
The most commonly reported problems on a used Mazda CX-9 are failures of the AWD transfer case, coolant leaks, including a water pump that leaks coolant into the oil, and a brake booster that fails, leaving a hard pedal. Check underneath for rust on the front suspension too.
For the CX-9 you're looking at, a Shufti Tailored check works from the car itself: its listing, kms, PPSR and recalls by VIN, your photos checked, and a repair cost and offer.
AWD Transfer Case Failure
On an AWD CX-9, the transfer case (also called the power take-off unit) sends drive to the rear wheels. It holds only a little oil, runs hot, and owners report it leaking, whining and failing (AustralianCar.Reviews).
Look underneath, behind the engine, for oil leaking from where the driveshaft to the rear wheels starts, and smell for burnt oil. On the drive, listen for a whine or grinding that rises with speed, and feel for clunks when moving off or turning tightly.
Ask whether its oil has ever been changed and whether it's been repaired, with receipts. A replacement is expensive, so price it in, or walk away if it's noisy.
Coolant Leaks
CX-9 owners report coolant leaks from a cracked cylinder head and from the water pump. On some engines the water pump sits inside the engine, so when it fails, coolant can leak into the oil and badly damage the engine.
With the engine cold, check the coolant tank is at the mark, and ask how often it needs topping up. Pull the dipstick and the oil filler cap: milky, light-brown sludge means coolant in the oil. On the drive, the temperature gauge should stay steady, and afterwards check for a sweet smell or drips.
Ask whether the water pump has been replaced, with receipts. Coolant in the oil is a reason to walk away; a dropping coolant level with no visible leak needs a mechanic's check before you buy.
A Failing Brake Booster
The brake booster uses engine vacuum to help you press the brake pedal. Owners report it failing, which makes the pedal hard and the car take much longer to stop (AustralianCar.Reviews).
With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times, then hold it down and start the engine: the pedal should sink a little. On the drive, the pedal should feel firm but not hard, and the car should stop straight without a hissing noise.
A failing booster is unsafe, so it has to be fixed before you drive the car regularly. Ask whether it's been replaced, and price it in if the pedal is hard.
Which Mazda CX-9 Years to Avoid?
No single Mazda CX-9 year stands out as one to avoid. Newer ones usually have fewer kilometres and less wear. Whatever the year, a car's condition, service history and recalls tell you more than its build date, and Shufti looks up the reported faults and recalls for the exact car from its listing.
- TB (2007–2016). 10 to 19 years old, typically about 130,000–240,000 km. At this age, condition and history count for more than the year: look hard for rust, worn suspension and leaks, and check whether a timing belt (if it has one) has been replaced.
- TC (2016–2023). 3 to 10 years old, typically about 40,000–130,000 km. ANCAP rating: 5 stars (2016). Stability control and low-speed AEB are standard. Most have done enough kilometres for wear items to come due: check the service history for regular servicing, and whether tyres, brakes and the battery need replacing. Mazda's new-car warranty is 5 years with unlimited kilometres for cars sold from August 2018, so ones first sold from 2021 may still be covered.
Kilometres are at the Australian average of about 12,600 km a year. Well above that means harder use; well below, ask why.
Warranty terms are from Mazda's warranty page, as at November 2026, for private buyers. The warranty runs from when the car was first sold or registered, which the service book shows.
For the CX-9 you're looking at, a Shufti Tailored check works from the car itself: its listing, kms, PPSR and recalls by VIN, your photos checked, and a repair cost and offer.

Stay Safe
Never go under a car held up only by a jack, and never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine. Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of fans and belts when the engine is running, and do checks under the bonnet with it switched off where you can. On the test drive, hold a current licence, confirm the car is registered and insured, obey road rules, and only brake hard when the road behind is clear. Meet in a safe, public-facing place, take someone with you, and don't carry large amounts of cash to a viewing.

Buying a Used Mazda CX-9: Questions Answered
Is a used Mazda CX-9 reliable?
It depends more on the particular car than the badge: how it was driven, loaded and serviced. Work through the commonly reported problems above, read the service history for servicing done on time, and run a PPSR check.
Which Mazda CX-9 years should I avoid?
No single Mazda CX-9 year stands out as one to avoid. Newer ones usually have fewer kilometres and less wear. Whatever the year, a car's condition, service history and recalls tell you more than its build date, and Shufti looks up the reported faults and recalls for the exact car from its listing.
This checklist covers the TB (2007–2016) and TC (2016–2023) Mazda CX-9. Problems reported across them include AWD transfer case failure, coolant leaks and a failing brake booster.
How many kilometres is too many for a used Mazda CX-9?
Kilometres matter less than how the car was driven and serviced. A high-kilometre SUV with a full service history can be a better buy than a low-kilometre one that's missed services, done short trips or been used for rideshare. Check the history for regular servicing, and on a hybrid ask for a battery health check.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a used Mazda CX-9?
It's most worth it on a car where a hidden fault could be costly. All-wheel-drive and hybrid systems can hide faults a visual check won't show, so ask for the service records for them and watch for warning lights on the test drive. Either way, start by checking the car yourself with this checklist, so you know what to look for and whether it's worth paying a mechanic to see. See Pre-purchase car inspection: what it checks and costs
How do I check a used Mazda CX-9 for money owing or a write-off?
Run a PPSR check with the car's VIN on ppsr.gov.au. It shows whether there's finance owing and whether the car has been reported stolen or written off. Run it on the day you pay. See What a PPSR check covers and what it doesn't
How do I check recalls on a used Mazda CX-9?
Search the government's Vehicle Recalls site for the Mazda CX-9. Each notice says which models and build dates it covers and what the fault is. A recall on record doesn't tell you whether the work was done on a particular car, so ask the seller for proof, or ask a Mazda dealer to check the VIN.
Mechanic, Checklist or Shufti?
Here's how Shufti stacks up against your other options.
A mechanic's inspection is the most thorough, but most buyers go without one. Shufti makes sure you're well informed either way.
