Common Problems on a Used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series
The most commonly reported problems on a used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series are exhaust filter (DPF) trouble, failing fuel injectors, clutch wear and shudder, and cracks in the chassis at the rear spring hangers. Most have worked hard, so ask how it was used, and ask for the paperwork for any modifications.
For the LandCruiser 70 you're looking at, a Shufti Tailored check works from the car itself: its listing, kms, PPSR and recalls by VIN, your photos checked, and a repair cost and offer.
Exhaust Filter (DPF) Trouble
Newer LandCruiser 70s have a filter in the exhaust, the DPF, that traps soot and burns it off as the vehicle drives. The burn-off needs a hot exhaust, so it happens on longer runs. One used mostly for short trips can keep starting a burn-off and never finishing it, and the filter slowly clogs (Unsealed 4X4, ReDriven).
The signs are a DPF or engine warning light, lost power, and the oil level creeping up as diesel from the interrupted burn-offs gets into the oil. Check the oil isn't above the top mark and doesn't smell of diesel, and ask how it was driven and whether the filter has ever been cleaned or replaced.
A clogged filter can sometimes be cleared by a mechanic, but a replacement is expensive, so price it in. If the filter has been removed instead, walk away or get it put back: driving without it is illegal and can void insurance.
Fuel Injector Trouble
LandCruiser 70 owners report fuel injectors failing: leaking, sticking or spraying unevenly. Left alone, a faulty injector can damage the engine (ProductReview owner reviews).
Listen to the engine from cold. It should start in a couple of seconds and settle to a smooth idle. Heavy knocking, rough running, or smoke that won't clear point to injectors. On the drive, flat spots, lost power and black smoke under load are the other signs.
Ask whether the injectors have been replaced, with receipts. Injectors are expensive as a set, so if the engine shows these signs, have a diesel mechanic check it before you buy.
Clutch Wear and Shudder
Most LandCruiser 70s are manuals, and towing, heavy loads and off-road driving wear the clutch. Owners report it shuddering when moving off and slipping as it wears (Unsealed 4X4, ReDriven).
On the drive, move off gently in first and in reverse, uphill if you can, and feel for a shudder. In a high gear at low speed, accelerate hard: if the revs rise without the vehicle speeding up, the clutch is slipping. The pedal should bite smoothly, not right at the top.
Ask when the clutch was last replaced, with receipts. A new clutch is a moderate to expensive job, so price it in if it's worn.
Chassis Cracks at the Rear Spring Hangers
The rear springs bolt to the chassis on brackets called hangers. Heavy loads, towing and corrugated roads strain them, and owners report the chassis cracking where they're fitted (Unsealed 4X4).
Look underneath at the chassis rails around the front and rear of each rear spring for cracks, fresh welds, plates bolted on or cracked paint. Check the rest of the frame for kinks and rust while you're there.
A cracked chassis affects how the vehicle holds together in a crash and under load, so treat it as a reason to walk away. A repair should come with an engineer's report.
Which Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series Years to Avoid?
No single Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series year stands out as one to avoid. Newer ones usually have fewer kilometres and less wear, and the newest may still have some new-car warranty left. Whatever the year, a car's condition, service history and recalls tell you more than its build date, and Shufti looks up the reported faults and recalls for the exact car from its listing.
- 70 Series (facelift) (2007 on). Up to 19 years old, typically up to about 240,000 km. ANCAP ratings: 3 stars (2010) for single cab chassis built to August 2016; 5 stars (2016) for single cab chassis built from September 2016 to December 2023; wagons, Troop Carriers and dual cabs are unrated. Stability control is standard from September 2016 builds; before, it wasn't available. AEB wasn't available on cars built to 2023. The current model. Toyota's new-car warranty is 5 years with unlimited kilometres for cars sold from January 2019 (up to 7 years on the engine and driveline with logbook servicing), so ones first sold from 2021 may still be covered. On older ones, check the service history and whether tyres, brakes and the battery are due.
Kilometres are at the Australian average of about 12,600 km a year. Well above that means harder use; well below, ask why.
Warranty terms are from Toyota's warranty page, as at November 2026, for private buyers. The warranty runs from when the car was first sold or registered, which the service book shows.
For the LandCruiser 70 you're looking at, a Shufti Tailored check works from the car itself: its listing, kms, PPSR and recalls by VIN, your photos checked, and a repair cost and offer.

Stay Safe
Never go under a car held up only by a jack, and never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine. Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of fans and belts when the engine is running, and do checks under the bonnet with it switched off where you can. On the test drive, hold a current licence, confirm the car is registered and insured, obey road rules, and only brake hard when the road behind is clear. Meet in a safe, public-facing place, take someone with you, and don't carry large amounts of cash to a viewing.

Buying a Used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series: Questions Answered
Is a used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series reliable?
It depends more on the particular car than the badge: how it was driven, loaded and serviced. Work through the commonly reported problems above, read the service history for servicing done on time, and run a PPSR check.
Which Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series years should I avoid?
No single Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series year stands out as one to avoid. Newer ones usually have fewer kilometres and less wear, and the newest may still have some new-car warranty left. Whatever the year, a car's condition, service history and recalls tell you more than its build date, and Shufti looks up the reported faults and recalls for the exact car from its listing.
This checklist covers the 70 Series (facelift) (2007 on) Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series. Problems reported across them include exhaust filter (DPF) trouble, fuel injector trouble, clutch wear and shudder and chassis cracks at the rear spring hangers.
How many kilometres is too many for a used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series?
Kilometres matter less than how a ute has worked. One with high highway kilometres and a full service history can be a better buy than a low-kilometre one that's towed heavy loads, worked on a mine site or been off-road. Check the service history for regular oil changes, ask how it was used, and find out whether any timing belt replacement is due, as it's a costly job.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series?
It's most worth it on a car where a hidden fault could be costly. Utes that have towed, carried heavy loads or been off-road can hide expensive wear underneath, so look under the car, and check the towbar, suspension and tyre wear closely. Either way, start by checking the car yourself with this checklist, so you know what to look for and whether it's worth paying a mechanic to see. See Pre-purchase car inspection: what it checks and costs
How do I check a used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series for money owing or a write-off?
Run a PPSR check with the car's VIN on ppsr.gov.au. It shows whether there's finance owing and whether the car has been reported stolen or written off. Run it on the day you pay. See What a PPSR check covers and what it doesn't
How do I check recalls on a used Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series?
Search the government's Vehicle Recalls site for the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series. Each notice says which models and build dates it covers and what the fault is. A recall on record doesn't tell you whether the work was done on a particular car, so ask the seller for proof, or ask a Toyota dealer to check the VIN.
Mechanic, Checklist or Shufti?
Here's how Shufti stacks up against your other options.
A mechanic's inspection is the most thorough, but most buyers go without one. Shufti makes sure you're well informed either way.
