Common Problems on a Used DE Mazda2

The main reports on a Mazda2 DE are wheel bearing trouble, including corroded hubs on 2007–08 cars, rattles and clunks from the steering, worn suspension bushes and body rust. It's a simple car, so most of these are ordinary age-related repairs. Check the driver's seat recall too.

Is a Mazda2 DE reliable?

Mostly, for its age. There's no big engine fault in our records. The reports are mainly wear in the steering and suspension, so a test drive on a rough road tells you a lot.

Steering and suspension

Wheel bearing noise or failure

Covers
Reported most on 2007–12 cars, including corroded hub bearings on 2007–08 cars.
What it means
A worn bearing gets louder and can eventually affect the wheel, so have it fixed rather than left.
What to check
Listen for a hum or growl that changes with speed, and when you turn gently left and right.

Rattle from the front passenger's floor on rough roads

Covers
Bulletin 06-001/13 lists US 2011–12 cars built before 10 December 2011.
What it means
Mazda's bulletin points to the steering rack's end bushing, and the repair is a new steering gear.
What to check
Drive over rough road at 10–30 km/h. The rattle comes from the passenger side, and stays when you turn the wheel.
Ask the seller
Has the steering rack ever been replaced?

Creak or squeak from the rear over bumps

Covers
Bulletin 02-002/14 lists US 2011–14 cars.
What it means
The rear shock's rod can stick to its bump stopper. It's a noise, and the repair is greasing those parts.
What to check
Drive slowly over a speed hump with the radio off.

Steering column play or clunks

Covers
Reported on 2008–15 cars.
What it means
Have any looseness in the steering checked before you buy.
What to check
With the car parked, rock the wheel gently and feel for a clunk or free play.

Worn suspension bushes

Covers
Reported on 2008–17 cars.
What it means
Bushes are a normal wear item at this age, so price them in if the car feels loose.
What to check
Listen for knocks over small bumps and feel for wander under braking.

Engine and gearbox

Rough or erratic idle from the throttle body

Covers
Reported on 2007–12 cars.
What it means
Often a clean rather than a part, but have it diagnosed if the idle hunts.
What to check
Let it idle warm with the air conditioning on and off. The revs should stay steady.

Harsh automatic shifts

Covers
Reported on 2011–12 automatics.
What it means
Have any thump or delay checked, because an automatic is a big repair on a cheap car.
What to check
Feel for thumps as it changes up and down, from cold if you can.

Clutch shudder or slip

Covers
Manual cars.
What it means
It's most obvious taking off on a hill or from cold. A worn clutch is a cost to price in.
What to check
Pull away on a slope from cold and feel for shudder.

Body and comfort

Early body rust

Covers
Reported on 2007–15 cars.
What it means
Rust spreads, and repairs can be worth more than a small car of this age.
What to check
Look along the sills, wheel arches and door bottoms with a torch.

Air conditioning not cooling

Covers
Reported across the range.
What it means
It may be the compressor or condenser, which is a real repair on a low-value car.
What to check
Run the air conditioning on full cold from the start of the test drive.

Which Mazda2 DE Years to Avoid?

No year stands out for faults, but safety separates them. Before May 2010, stability control was only on some variants, and cars with just two airbags rate lower.

Our shortlist

A car built from October 2011 with stability control and six airbags, and with the seat recall done.

What changed, by build date

  • Good better for a buyer
  • Mixed upsides and downsides
  • Bad a problem to check
  • Unknown effect not clear
  1. DE goes on sale.

  2. Recall on 8,858 cars: high idle can reduce brake assistance.

  3. Stability control becomes standard.

  4. ANCAP rating of 5 out of 5 covers cars built from here.

  5. DJ replaces it.

Age, typical kilometres and warranty

Use these to judge whether a car's odometer looks normal for its age, and whether any new-car warranty is left.

  • 12–19 yrsAge
  • 150,000–240,000 kmTypical
  • EndedNew-car warranty

Kilometres are at the Australian average of about 12,600 km a year. Well above that means harder use; well below, ask why.

Safety ratings

Crash ratings can differ by body style and build date, so match the rating to the car you're looking at.

DE Mazda2 Questions

Does a Mazda2 DE have stability control?

It's standard from May 2010, and was on some variants before that. Check the car itself, because it also decides the ANCAP rating.

Which Mazda2 DE has the seat recall?

The recall lists 2007–2012 cars, for a cracked link in the driver's seat height adjuster. A rattling seat is a warning sign.

Is a Mazda2 DE cheap to fix?

Most reported faults are ordinary wear. A new steering rack or automatic is the exception, and can cost a large share of what the car is worth.
